"FORUM 18": Belarus: KGB pressure Orthodox not to venerate Soviet-era martyrs

Belarus discourages the commemoration of Orthodox Christians killed for their faith by the Soviet Union, Forum 18 News Service has found. Today's KGB secret police have sought to have icons of the New Martyrs, as they are known by the Orthodox Church, removed from Grodno Cathedral. Russian Orthodox Deacon Andrei Kurayev told Forum 18 that "Some comrades from the local KGB asked local clergy why they were inciting the people in such a way." While there was no official order to remove the icons – "it was on the level of a chat" - Kurayev reported that Bishop Artemi (Kishchenko) of Grodno and Volkovysk refused to take them down. "He told the KGB that he couldn't rewrite history." KGB officers also often monitor visitors to Kuropaty, where New Martyrs are probably among mass graves of Stalinist repression victims, a local Orthodox source told Forum 18. The act of going there – even to light candles - is "fraught with tension" with the current Belarusian regime, according to the source. An Orthodox chapel planned for the site has never been built. On Sunday April 20^ththe Orthodox Church of the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia will officially celebrate the 10^th anniversary of its founding. April 20^th is also the feast of the Entrance of the Lord Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, also called Palm Sunday or Willow Sunday, according to the Russian Orthodox calendar. Update on Palm Sunday 20 April and the Parish Anniversary

We regretfully announce that Bishop Gabriel will be unable to join us for Palm Sunday and the Anniversary of our parish due to his increased responsibilities since the death of our beloved Metropolitan Laurus. Vladyka has asked us to reschedule his visit for this summer and sends his sincerest regrets of this necessary change in his schedule.

Our normal schedule for services will take place on Palm Sunday. Following the Liturgy there will be a festal meal to mark the occasion. Palm Sunday is a joyous feast day normally in the Orthodox Church, but it is also the start of “Great and Holy Week” which is the most solemn and holy week of the entire Church year.

Today, on the day of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, His Eminence Metropolitan Laurus, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, reposed in the Lord.

The late Vladyka Laurus "fought the good fight, completed the course, preserved inviolate the faith," and conquered the long division in the Russian Church.

Tomorrow evening, Monday 17 March, we will serve a panikhida at 6 p.m. for all those who can come.

Please keep our dear Metropolitan in your prayers. He was very dear to us all.

May His Eminence abide in the Kingdom of Heaven. Memory eternal to him!
